Se visites um
lugar por uma só vez, ele fique um lugar visitado.
Se visite-lo por duas
vezes, ele fique a tua casa.
When you visit a place once, it becomes a place you have
visited.
When you visit it twice, it becomes your home.
I am not sure, who is the author of this words, so I am not
able to give any credit; they may well be of my own invention. So, what do they
say? To me, they reveal some truth about travelling. Exploring new places, new
cultures, broadening one’s horizons, can be exciting. It is an act of opening up,
abrir as portas do seu coração. And,
for many people it is the greatest value of travel: to see what you haven’t
seen yet.
So, what is the value of going somewhere you’ve already
been once, twice or more? The answer may be hidden in the gesture of coming
back. If you come back, it means you go to a place you are already familiar
with. During one or two of my holidays I noticed that even a return from short
escapade made me feel more at home in the place I was settled in (even though I
was staying there for the first time). The same point is in returning to any
place we have already visited; it becomes our adoptive home. This happens simply
because we returned there!
For some, this may seem a mere waste of time. Why go
somewhere we have already been?
Because the time has passed. Because this place is never the
same again. Because you are highly unlikely to meet exactly the same group of
people. Finally, because you yourself are now a different person. And what you
will see will be quite different!
This happened to me in Porto. During my first visit in 2014 the
day was cloudy, and it was relatively warm. The city seemed unwelcome and a bit
shabby; it seemed old, weary and destroyed. Although I enjoyed a cruise on
Douro and the freshness of Atlantic breeze and was impressed by the São Bento
railway station, all covered in china blue azulejos
just as much as the magical Lello &
Irmão bookshop, where J. K. Rowling found inspiration for her Harry Potter
series. And sardinhas which were
served by a nice Cabo-Verdean girl, who was impressed by my ability to speak
level A-zero Portuguese 😊 That being said, I could not say I had left with a sense of being smitten.

This year, when we came, the weather was sunny. The town was
bright and full of life. We climbed the hills above the Ribeira, wandered
throug narrow, mysterious alleys. There was no Livraria, there was just a glimpse at São Bento, but I saw the beauty
of the Sé Cathedral, which I could barely remember from my first visit. Then
again, down to the Ribeira and its houses, radiant with all colours of the
rainbow, which I did not notice at the first time. And the cruize, during which
the group sang Polish sailors' songs. And a couple of people giving a salsa
show just before we left. Quite a different image; and a feeling of unrestrained joy
and happiness.
All in all, this could be summed up by Wisława Szymborska’s words, which say: Nic dwa razy się nie zdarza, PT: nada acontece por duas vezes (da mesma maneira), ENG: nothing
happens twice (in the same manner)!
Still, I am looking forward to my third visit! Desta vez, deve ser "Porto a noite", como diz esta linda canção, que encontrei recentemente no Web (link HERE).
So here is the point of returning and maybe its greatest
danger as well: you may fall head over hills with a place you were not
initially attracted to!
Segue, to be
continued!
